Dengeki

Dengeki is a subsidiary of Mediaworks, a large Japanese publishing house which publishes, among other things, Dengeki Bunkou, Dengeki Animaga and Dengeki Daioh as well as several gaming monthlies. Dengeki Daioh is probably the most well known, serializing popular stories including Azumanga Daioh and Pitaten as well as a large number of manga adapations of anime series such as Boogiepop Doesn't Smile, Gunparade March, and Inifite Ryvius.

The monthly in which Kino appears in is known as Dengeki HP (although I have no idea what "HP" stands for) and is a thick paperback volume that is about the same thickness as many manga "phonebook" anthologies, although about half the size by width and height. Inside are serializations of many novel series as well as numerous articles, interviews, and even a serial manga. You can sometimes find HP in the monthlies section of Japanese bookstores; price varies, although I've seen them ranging from $12 to $15. It's mostly text with a smattering of pictures; each novel chapter usually has a page of color artwork preceeding it. There is also a chapter of manga, and often lots of advertising information for Dengeki's various properties.

A lot of advertisement and promotions have been published in Dengeki Animaga which is a full-color, bi-monthly anime magazine similar to Newtype or Animage. It is heavily focused on shounen anime, especially those with ties to Dengeki series, and each month it comes with numerous fold-out pinup posters, often of scantily-clad girls (although it is not as mature as the popular Megami magazine, as Animaga is well self-censored.) Most of the promotions for Kino have included very nice fold-out posters for Kino, as well as some articles on the series with accompaning artwork. Issues 1-3 have lots of Kino information (tv series) as well as 14-16 (movie.) You can find Animaga in the anime magazine section along with Newtype and other related publications, and it also retails for around $12-$15. Ordering back issues is more problematic and usually difficult since most stores don't store old issues.
