What is the beautiful world? Kino no Tabi ~
the Beautiful World, also known as Kino's Travels or Kino's
Journey began as a story serialized in the Japanese monthly
Dengeki magazine and was later compiled and released as novels by
Dengeki Bunkou.
It details the lives of a human, Kino, and a motorcycle, Hermes. The two
were travelers, venturing to various countries and experiencing the life,
people and culture. Each country had its own unique way of life, often
starkly contrasting with others' views of what is good or moral or just,
leading to the thought that the world is not beautiful - therefore it
is. Kino and Hermes did not judge, merely absorbing the prevailing
culture as they continued to explore the world. After three days, the pair
would depart again and begin to travel anew; staying any longer would mean
giving up traveling.
Kino no Tabi was animated as a 13-episode television series in 2003. The series followed the novels in both the story lines told and the serial nature. Most episodes can stand alone, yet each contribute to the whole that makes up rich fabric of Kino and Hermes' world.
A point of clarification: Kino no Tabi exists as a novel and animated television series. There is (as of February 2004) no manga serialization of the story.
