The Past

The following contains spoilers; highlight to read.

Kino meets up with Kino in the story, Country of Adults. He was the one who built Hermes out of spare parts, and with Kino's help, named it after an old friend of his. He is the one who talks of the contract between rider and motorrad - the rider provides the balance, the motorrad the speed - and together they can travel to more places than either alone. He is critical of Kino's country's policy on operations, and when Kino also criticizes the policy to her parents, he is blamed. He starts to leave, but notices that Kino's father is holding a knife with the intention of killing his daughter. Kino blocks him and is killed in the process. However, Kino adopts his name and accepts the contract with Hermes, and continues traveling in his spirit.
