Riku is a large white dog with long, fluffy fur and a stocky build. His face always carries a smile even when he isn't amused, as that was the way he was born and has no control over it. He travels along with his master, Shizu in much the same manner Hermes travels with Kino. Although he tends to hide it from strangers, Riku can talk and regularly holds conversations with Shizu.
Riku and Hermes do not appear to get along. Although Riku is fairly nonchalant, Hermes finds him to be very rude and inpertinent.
The Past
The following contains spoilers; highlight to read.
Riku first appears in Coliseum along with Shizu. However, the mechanisms in which he met up with Shizu are unknown. Although the two are not mentioned in the anime aside from Coliseum, there are several chapters in the novels dealing with them - and all of them are told from Riku's point of view (which leads to the amusing first paragraph: "My name is Riku. I'm a large, white dog with long fur. Together with my master, Shizu, we travel...")
